Boston Dynamics' Atlas Moving Engine Covers
Atlas
doing some object manipulation under autonomous control (i.e. it isn't
being remote controlled by humans). The robot is given a list of bin
locations to move components between and has to work out how to
manoeuvre them. This contrasts with industrial robot arms used for
decades in factories to e.g weld and assemble car parts. Those robots
are simply articulated arms, not much different to a digger and the
movement range of the various "limbs" in three-dimensional space, driven
by stepper motors, hydraulics or pneumatics is controlled by a sequence
of commands in a computer program.
